1. A child this day is born
A child of high renown
Most worthy of a sceptre
A sceptre and a crown

Glad tidings to all men
Glad tidings sing we may,
Because the King of all kings
Was born on Christmas-Day.

2. These tidings shepherds heard
Whilst watching o'er their fold;
'Twas by an Angel unto them
That night revealed and told.

3. Then was there with the Angel
An host incontinent1
Of heavenly bright soldiers,
All from the highest sent.

4. They praised the Lord our God,
And our celestial King;
All glory be in Paradise,
This heavenly host do sing.

That sitteth still on high,
With praises and with triumph great,

1. Un enfant est né aujourd'hui
Un enfant de grande renommée
Digne d'un sceptre
Un sceptre et une couronne

Bonne nouvelle pour tous les hommes
Chantons cette bonne nouvelle,
Car le Roi des rois
Est né le jour de Noël.

2. Ces nouvelles, les bergers les entendirent
Tandis qu'ils veillaient sur leurs troupeaux ;
C'est un ange qui les leur révéla cette nuit-là.

3. Alors était là avec l'ange
Une armée intarissable
De brillants soldats célestes,
Tous envoyés du plus haut des cieux.

4. Ils louèrent le Seigneur notre Dieu,
Et notre Roi céleste ;
Gloire au Paradis,
chantez cette armée céleste.

5. Gloire à Dieu,
