My Lady's coachman John, be'ng married to her Maid,
Her Ladyship did hear on't and to him thus she said:
"I never had a wench so handsome in my life;
I prithee therefore tell me, how got you such a wife?"
John star'd her in the face and answered very blunt:
"E'en as my Lord got you." "How's that?" "Why, by the (
compter)."

John, le cocher de Madame, ayant épousé sa femme de chambre,
Sa Seigneurie l'apprit et lui tint ce langage :
« Jamais je n'eus servante aussi belle en ma vie ;
Dis-moi donc, je t'en prie : comment as-tu trouvé pareille épouse ? »
John la regarda droit dans les yeux et répondit sans détour :
« Tout comme Monseigneur vous a eue. » « Comment cela ? » « Eh bien... »
